Filter species lists by geographic location or type
e.g. classification browser just shows all species in North America or all “birds” or all “birds of North America”

Have descriptions of broader categories, not just species.
Without context a list of millions of species loses a lot of the richness of life. Grouping species by habitat and phylogenetic group will provide a lot of informative content and there are less habitats and phylogenetic groups by orders of magnitude than there are individual species.

Forget the image contests
The focus should be on quality images, particularly of unrepresented species, not beauty contests -- there are other places that are better suited for such things than an "encyclopedia of life".

Make a key for all the species.
Have a key for everything starting high up (to identify phylum and class) then eventually having the key go all the way to individual species.

Please change website colors. Pale blue hard to read for those with vision difficulties.

integrate Cornell's eBird site and Bird Id database into EOL
The birding community os very active on eBird and Cornell has a huge amount of data in their Bird Id databases. They have photos, bird callls, range maps, habitats etc
